1 Small Step Toward More Self-Care

My coaching and the products I’ve created, The Mood Ladies, are all about promoting self-care. I see so many people, especially women, over-committed, exhausted, stressed and overwhelmed. Often they aren’t able to really enjoy the many good things in their lives because there are too many to-dos on the list.

I was reminded of this yesterday when I met a woman who loved the idea of the Mood Lady cards & other products, but wasn’t quite sure she would actually use them. She said she wanted to take time for herself and she wanted to journal, find inspiration, but there was no time. She said she knew she needed it.

I could hear her sincerity and frustration. I could tell she didn’t simply think she should do these things, but that she truly wanted to. She just didn’t know how. I gave her a quick strategy in our short exchange and now I’d like to share it with you: Start small! I invited her to decide on something that would feel good to accomplish, but something that was realistic. Telling yourself that you should journal every day and making that your goal is usually unrealistic, especially if you’re starting from zero. I pointed out that she could commit to journaling 3 times a week for 10 minutes or once a week for 20 minutes or whatever works for her – it just needs to be something she will feel good about afterward. I reminded her that whatever she does will be more than she is doing now.

She admitted that in the past, she would have too high expectations and we all know what happens then…we can’t consistently follow through, we get disappointed in ourselves and the task or new routine becomes one of those things we should do. And we feel bad about ourselves because we ‘failed’. That’s not very motivating, is it?

So, wherever you are – however little or much self-care you are doing – if you have a routine that you know would serve you well that you haven’t adopted yet, start with one small step. You can add to it as it becomes more natural for you.  Take it slow and acknowledge yourself each time you move in the right direction. What one small step will you take to bring more self-care into your life toady?
